Car Stereos: audio, deck light, grand cherokee

Question
QUESTION: I have a 95 grand cherokee and i cant get any sound from the speakers.  I replaced the antenna and that didnt work.  I thought the head unit may have gone bad so i hooked a aftermarket one up and still nothing.  I get sound for a few seconds then it stops.

ANSWER: Hi Sam,

If you turn it off, and then on again, do you get audio for a few more seconds and then it goes away again, or did you only get sound for a few seconds when you first hooked it up and then it went away?

Also, does the vehicle have a 'premium' factory sound system in it?

Lastly, do all the lights on the deck light up OK, appear to function, etc?

QUESTION: yeah if i turn it off and on again i get audio for a few seconds then nothing.  It has the premium factory sound system and all the lights on the deck light up fine.

Answer
Hi Sam,

Sounds like it's either got a cold solder joint (which means you'll likely have to trash it), or it's overheating.  Have a friend help you.  Get access to the factory amp, put your hand on it, and have your friend turn on the system.  Feel if the amp *clicks* (thermal shutdown), when the system cuts out, and feel if the amp is too hot to touch.  If either of these things happen, you'll likely need a new amplifier.

Good luck,
Justin
