Auto Racing: Using a ´self prepared´ gasoline additive concentration, gasoline companies, contrary to popular belief

Question
Hi Blue, I am wondering what you could recommend and/or add to about a claim of what can be done with ´at home products´ to use as fuel-booster/additives on another mecanic website that I recently viewed. The site of the very professional sounding host mentioned it is possible to mix in an exact ratio; equal exact small amounts of diesel w/paint thinner, & w/acetone - > To a tank full of gasoline for any gas burning vehicle before refilling the empty tank. I have experimented with this with my old clunker Toyota and have seen good torque response for going uphill. What else might you recommend, perhaps, for the cause of useful full additives, or, to contrary. Thank you for your time in answering. Jes.

Answer
I've heard of everything from home brews to mothballs, many people claiming success.  My concern is, the only true way to make horsepower is to either maximize an inefficient engine, or make it take more air/fuel in, and be able to expel it faster.
The properties in these chemicals would do the following:
Diesel fuel would raise octane, which contrary to popular belief SLOWS the burning process, the higher the octane, the slower and cooler the fuel burns.  A slower burn "pushes" down on the piston longer, if you can imagine.
The other chemicals may help clean up deposits in the delivery system and valves which if they are in need of cleaning, would help.
My concern is, diesel fuel tends to jell with time, and the additives used by companies differ and may not be computable with thinner and acetone. Also, these two products may evaporate and leave behind some nasty residue like plain old varnish.  They are also real hard on rubber used in fuel lines, carb floats and gaskets.
Most gasoline companies are using a marked increase of alcohol, mixed with these chemicals creates an unstable concoction.
Personally, an occasional tank of premium and a quality fuel system cleaner like Gumout will have the same effect, and be far more predictable and safe.
The only additive in all my years that has a tangible, safe and predictable gain is nitromethane which carries an extra molecule of oxygen.  Search the web for a dealer near you hopefully avoiding the hefty surcharge UPS has for shipping hazardous liquids.
If you use it, you'll need to increase your jet sizes if your car is carbureted, fuel injection systems generally can compensate.
I hope this helps, good luck and take care.
