Auto Racing: stock car mechanic, race car setup, stock car racing

Question
I would like some info on how to become a stock car mechanic. I had some training in high school, then went on to school at NTI in N. Carolina. I graduated from there and I am now working at a dealership. I have had approx. 6 yrs. total of experience. I am also ASE certified for brakes. If you could send me some web addresses, or classifieds, etc. I would be gratefull.

Answer
HBi Joseph,

Here are two websites I found on Google, simply by doing a search for "stock car mechanic" - - -you can probably refine that search and find any number of specialties related to stock car racing. Welding, sheet metal fabrication, engine building, suspension dynamics and so forth.

These two schools also offer some employment advice.

Now then. Last week on the TV show Wind Tunnel (SPEED TV), Dave Despain interviewed Steve Letart, crew chief for Jeff Gordon. Steve is 30 and has his engineering degree.  BUT, he started working for Rick Hendrick when he was 16, sweeping the garage floors, cleaning the bathrooms, and chasing parts.  And just 15-16 years later, holds one of the highest paying non-driving jobs in NASCAR.

Finally, a subscription to Circle Track Magazine will be full of ads for employment agencies, schools, and other opportunities for you. A year's subscription is about $18.00 and is some of the best money I spend in a year. There's a wealth of knowledge in every issue.  Contact them at: 800 800 6825, or e-mail:circletrack@palmcoastd.com
They have great technical articles and lots of them , classified ads too.

I hope this is a help- - -Good Luck !!
