Auto Racing: cams, cams, mopar 2.2

Question
I HAVE A 1986 DODGE CHARGER I RACE ON 1/4 PAVED OVAL. THE ENGINE IS A 2.2 WITH A 445 HEAD SHAVED 160 WITH A HOLLEY 500 CFM CARB. WITH A 634 FINAL 2ND GEAR. WE HAVE TO RUN STOCK INTAKE AND STOCK HEAD PORTS BLOCK IS ALSO BORED 40 OVER. WHAT  CAM WOULD YOU SUGGEST I USE? RPM RANGE 3000 TO 6500 THANKS DWIGHT

Answer
Chrysler corporation, more specifically the Mopar performance subdivision put a lot of time and effort developing hi-perf parts for the 2.2.  Their components, in my experience, hit it on the head every time in increased performance, durability, predictability; an overall perfect product.  With that in mind, the MP PURPLE SHAFT *P4529314 would be your best choice for the maximum bang for the buck.  If you want a little less radical tendency (Poor idle, hard starting, "fussiness"), go with the *P4452767.
The 2.2 holds its own quite well in the upper rpms, most concern is not losing low rpm torque, a 1/4 track means the faster out of the hole the better.
I recommend ordering the offset keys to dial in your cam, and offer some adjust ability if you desire more low end or more high end.
Be sure to use new rockers, there are high performance ones available from MP (Mopar Performance), I never used them and had no failures so it's a personal preference.
If you haven't already, get the MP catalog for the 4 cyls, there are some very cool toys in this book.
Best of luck.
