Auto Racing: camaro/ engines, application ranges, dear jesse

Question
Dear Jesse
I have two questions, I recently obtained a 1967 rs from my father, my two questions are: the camaro was purchased with a 307 that someone rebuilt, I have been told that this small block was no good as far as a street/strip racer. Will this engine hold up against another small block or do I need to find another. My second question is I have access to a 454 if needed, which is better going with a small block or the big block. Thank you for your time and input ....Luis

Answer
I do not have any experience with a 307 motor, but it looks like the application ranges are mid 70's cars. Are you sure it is not the 302 motor? I would stick to the small block motor especially if it is the original motor. Do not waste your time trying to squeeze the 454 into it, I guarantee it is more trouble than it is worth. Find out if the motor is the original or not, if not swap it out for a 350 crate motor and call it a day.
