Auto Racing: 2006 GT Mustang, cold air intake, cold air kit

Question
Hi, Steve,
I have a 2005 GT Mustang and am interested in putting on a cold air intake for power and for gas mileage.  The dealer (where I am considering having it done) has told me that I shouldn't put just the cold air intake, that it should also have the expanded exhaust system.  I am not a street racer, nor have any desire for it, but do love my car and want a bit more out of it.  Thanks for any help.

While an exhaust system certainly isn't a bad idea, it's not really a must have if you're just putting a cold air kit on the car.  A cold air kit alone isn't really going to do a ton for power or mileage...you're looking at a bump of 10-15 horsepower at best and maybe an extra 1-2mpg.  Exhaust won't really do much for fuel economy, but it's worth another 10-20hp and the cool factor of an aftermarket exhaust is undeniable.  When shopping for cold air kits for the '05-up Mustangs, be sure to pay attention to whether or not the computer will need to be retuned since the newer factory settings are so sensitive that some cold air kits can cause the engine to run lean.  Hope this helps.
