Question -
Im getting my first car pretty soon. I saved up around $2,500 cdn. I live in Toronto and I'm more into imports rather than domestics. I'm wondering whats the perfect car i can buy considering looks and performance. Or should I save up more $?

Answer -
Hi Dave:

I don't usually answer questions about street cars, but I feel strongly enough about this to give you my insight.

Save a little more money, and get a Toyota - - - or a Saturn (made in the US with Toyota parts)

I also strongly recommend a manual stick shift transmission.  Living in Canada, you will benefit from knowing how to drive stick shift, and it will also make you a better overall driver. Also, automatic transmissions wear out, and cost thousands to repair. Manual transmissions last much longer.

Why Toyota- - -quite simply there is nothing better. Honda are good, Nissan are good, Toyota are the best of all. I race Datsuns (Nissans) but my street car is a Toyota.

Nuff said ?

Best of luck

Answer
Hi again

The Mazda is a great car and with the 3 liter V-6 it will be pretty quick. With the V-6 and a manual 5 speed tranny it'll be a rocket !

All high mileage cars carry some risk.  Try to buy something with well under 100,000 miles,  in the low 80's would be good.  Then switch it to pure synthetic oil. But NOT Mobile 1,  go with Castrol Syntec or Valvoline synthetic.  Follow the manufacturers recommendation for the viscosity (weight) for your northern weather.

Back to Mazda,  As a used car they offer an excellent value because for some reason they don't hold market value well. You can buy a newer, better car for less money, and there's nothing wrong with them.

Cool Toyotas ?  Well I have a V-6 Solara (2001 with the 5 speed tranny (VERY rare) but that was a $13,000.00 deal.  The older Corollas are OK  2 doors are cool , 4 door cars are for the old folks.

Other cars you can consider are Honda Civics, Nissans, if you find one you like, but I'd suggest you avoid Mitsubishi, I hear some service horror stories now and then.

I wish you luck
