Auto Racing: tubbing, race car builders, chev truck

hello dan, i have a 1988 chev truck, reg cab, short box, i am going to put a 454 in it not sure whether to go turbo or super yet, anyways my question is i guess, i am thinking about tubbing out the back of my truck to put slicks on and shortening my rear axle, what would be the best way of going about this for frame mods, i also thought about boxing in the frame and maybe adding an additional cross member for support, i want to run this thing on the track but still want it street legal, please let me know if you have any ideas? thanks a lot, mike

Hi Mike:

The modifications you speak of are usually given to pro fabricators.   It's NOT easy work and requires quite a bit of specialized sheet metal equipment.  You'll need to look in local phone books for race car builders, call and ask until you find the right guy.

The rear end shortening is a fairly common practice, there are many shops throughout the country that specialize in differential modifications.  

If you need help starting, call Summit Racing at 1800-230-3030 and ask.  They should have some useful info for you
