Hi Buck:

I'm guessing that the new distributor came from a wrecking  yard.  If so , you will have to go back, find a similar one and see how it is wired. However, everything electronic has to have a power source, so I imagine that the extra wires are for positive and negative (ground) .  If you bought the system new, then the instructions will tell you more than I could without being there and seeing it.

Good luck with your racing !

dan; a follow up if i may. i read in the back of the chiltons book that these wires run to a modual, i was wondering did i need this modual? or can they be hooked up to the + and - , let me ask you this if i hooked these wires up to pos, neg, the third one ? what would or could i burn out if wrong? i know that in race cars you dont always need components in pass. cars i/e module? thanks buck

Answer
Hello again :

Your best source of information is the Chiltons manual you mentioned.  all electronic ignitions are different, and many are subject to being burned out if connected incorrectly.  You should use the module if the original system had one.  Nothing is going to work without it.   And more importantly, you could damage the thing if you hook the wrong wire to the battery current.

I'm afraid I can't help you much more with it. For racing , I use an MSD system and an infra-red pick up system in my distributor .  And I have used a Nissan Electronic distributor with the MSD box. That distributor has a reluctor and a pickup coil inside, and a trigger or module outside that then goes to the MSD box for enhancing the spark.

But each system is different, and complex.  You need to find service information on the exact distributor you're useing and read until you find the correct info.

Good luck
