Auto Racing: Speedometer cable assembly., speedometer cable, discribtion

Question
Greetings Steve!
Hopefully you can offer me some info on connecting the speedometer to it's cable.
Before I try to explain my experience with my '87 let me say that I have had 3 hrs. of sleep over the pass 3 or 4 days and so the grammer, spelling and discribtion of my problem may not be clear.
OK, said that I am unable to bring the cable through the cluster assembly (where the speedometer is attached.
The cable(outer) has the round steel piece and right behind this is a plastic ring that circles the cable. I was thinking perhaps pressing down on the small flat section and then perhaps the cable will be secured and now ready for the speedometer So far no luck.
I checked with my '87 manual and it said I needed to remove the 2 screws that secures the s'meter to the cluster. I know exactly what the manual was referrin to and  my s'meter doesn't accomadate this sort of assembly. I have an old hard cover repare manual for 1982 and what it described for assembly was more like what I have yet it wasn' exactly.

Do you know what I am trying to explain to you?>
Can you offer me some advice and hopefully explain how to get the speedometer mounted and connected to the cable?
I would really appreciate it if you could...I have spent houirs trying to get it all together!

Have a great day!kim

Answer
Kim-

Blech...speedometers are such a pain.  If you're the one who took it apart, simply reverse the steps you took to do that.  If not...we might have a problem.  The '87 clusters are a strange animal.  Since '87 was the first year for the new clusters after the change over to the newer looking cars, many of the clusters aren't exactly the way books say.  They're sort of a cross between the '79-'86 clusters and the '87-'93 clusters.  Without seeing it first hand there's not a whole lot I can tell you.  It would probably be best to try and work off of both diagrams since it's most likely got a bit of both designs in there.  Hope this helps.
