Auto Racing: v8 rpm, gear vendors overdrive, normal temperatures

Question
Hi John

Thank you for your quick responds to my question about my new 351C in the Mach 1 but I need to clarify something.  Yes, the rear is geared very low, I'm not sure to the extent but is it true that that shouldn't matter in terms of engine rpm>  IN other words, if I keep the tach in a safe spot I am ok?  My question is, can I run it at 4K or 5K all day without problems?

Answer
Hi  Mark ,assuming your engine is in very good condition, runs at  normal temperatures, has good oil pressure (use a heavier synthetic) i'd say yes it would be ok at 4500 for extended periods .there are street stock cars (circle track) that are stock 2 bbl engines that are run at 5500 rpm for hundreds of laps . if cost were not a problem i would look into a gear vendors overdrive.one other thought... i'd check to see how hot the rear end is running ,nascar uses the same rear and have a cooler and pump to not burn seals and accelerate gear wear.again i recomend a top  synthetic oil, with the heaviest viscosity. jmazio
