Auto Racing: MSD box - possible damage?, 67 camaro, spark plug wire

Question
HI!

Hope you are having a good weekend...we bought an MSD for 67 Camaro, 350, specs don't matter at this point. Hubby and I had a housefire 2 years ago. MSD was still in the box with plastic wrap. It was on a shelf in the living room - about 3 ft from ceiling approx. Fire was in  back 1/2 of the house, this was front half. Fire didn't make it this far but we sure had a tremendous amount of smoke damage...

Here's what the package looked like...plastic was melted somewhat, like when someone puts a cigarette near the plastic wrap on the pkg, starts to shrivel up...there were places it was gone...box sustained some smoke damage but very little...inside MSD looks fine, as wires do, they weren't melted in the slightest. BUT here's the thing. Five feet further (away from fire origination), the heat was enough to cause the fan blades on ceiling fan to all bend and point straight down.

Question is Do you think the MSD is alright? I know they are able with stand high temp from the drag car but I don't know the temps of an engine vs the heat and smoke of a fire... What do you think? I think I covered all the points and possible factors, if not let me know and I will answer them.

Thanks

Answer
Hi  Audra and Frank.Thank you ,Yes i had a Great! weekend ,(my 32nd consecutive year attending the NHRA nationals at my home track at Englishtown).I think your MSD box maybe OK.You can do a quick check.....Put the box near a 12 volt source (battery) using a few test leads with alligator clips ,(Radio Shack) Connect the thick RED wire to the battery + ,connect the thick BLACK wire to the battery NEG. connect the thin ORANGE wire to the coil's + terminal, connect the thin BLACK wire to the coil's- (negative)terminal. place a spark plug in a spark plug wire that has been installed in/on the coil to visually see the spark ,ground the sparkplug outer shell ,and  now connect the thin Red wire to the 12volt positive of the battery!!!CAUTION!!! THE BOX IS NOW READY TO CREATE A SPARK!.Lastly, take a paper clip and bridge across the 2 terminals of the distributor connector (3 inch long lead coming out with a black plastic connector, you may see an orange and a purple tracer) ,If the box is good it will spark intensely ,If it is damaged ,you can send it back to MSD ,they will send You  another,(I've sent damaged 6A boxes back and paid $56.00 ea. for  replacements).I hope your home wasn't damaged too badly and i hope I've been of some  assistance .Thank You and let me know how you make out  on this .  J Mazio
