Auto Racing: Idleing, datsun 280 z, fuel injection systems

Question
Hey, my name is Alex Varkonda and I just bought a 1991 Nissan NX2000...not for street racing and is not for street car, just got a good deal and needed something to get around in, i wouldnt bother you but i have been trying for weeks to get help on the engine.  When i start the car it revs up to about 3000 rpm's and then goes back down and stalls out...If i rev it a little it will go and work but still when i put the clutch in and stop at a stop sign or light, it will stall or just go between 0-1000 rpm's back and forth...thinking it might be a vaccum leak? but no clue, please help.  Thanks again!

Answer
Hi Alex:

I suspect that your problem might be either a vaccum leak, or it coule be any of a dozen things within the fuel injection system.

The purchase of a vaccum guage might be of some help in tracking a leak.

As for the fuel injection problem, you should try to buy a factory service manual (the aftermarket manuals dodge the fuel injection systems ) and read through it a couple of times.  The one time I had a probeem with an old Datsun 280 Z, the factory manual saved me after three days of hard work.  However, once you have found a problem, and corrected it, you will be much more skilled at FI than before, If it's worth the effort for you.  If not, probably a trip to the dealeership is the best answer.

Quite frankly, the more modern injection systems leave me scratching my head.  I'm pretty good with multiple carburetors, and stuff such as that, but when it comes to computers running engine management, I'm as baffled as your mother would be !

Good luck
