Auto Racing: engine building, small block chevy, hypereutectic pistons

Question
John I have built several small block Chevy engines over the years and never experienced this problem. I put together a 30 over big block 454 using all new components. Roller cam, Keith Black 11:1 pistons, all new rings, crank, Brand New Canfield Aluminum rectangular port heads, air gap manifold, high flow oil pump etc. Everything is new. I started it up and it smokes and there are puddles of oil beneath each hedder collector. What causes this. Please help.

Answer
Hi Roy.Without any other clues,I'd say step one ,pull the spark plugs ,are all 8 oily? "puddles"tells me it's using oil on both banks .I'd pull the intake off and "READ" the intake gaskets .each port must! have a 360 degree perfect dry seal.Have the heads been milled? then a thicker intake gasket  such as a Mr. Gasket #5818 which is 1/8"thick to allow for milled heads .are you running a pcv valve? is it in a valve cover without baffles? a pcv above a rocker arm  can "drink " a large amount of oil in a short time . i'm assuming the ring package was correctly installed(the hypereutectic pistons need a much larger top end gap and may butt when hot leading to scored cylinders and near zero oil control .I hope this has given you a few clues to that oil problem.let me know what you find.Good Luck .JM
