NASCAR Racing: Wheel studs, wheel studs, four wheels

Question
Are there ever any instances where cross-threaded assembly of wheel studs or
other fasteners have caused a car to lose a race or significant time during a
race?

Answer
Hi Mike,

The teams in NASCAR hire only the best in the business, so they are not really prone to making mistakes in the construction of the car.  However, during the race, there are several opportunities to make a mistake during a pit stop.  There are five studs on each wheel, and there are four wheels, so during a pit stop both guys have a total of 20 opportunies to make a mistake.  This is normally done by tightening the lugnuts too tight, thus messing up the line of the thread and making it impossible to get off.  When you change 4 tires in 14 seconds, you are under serious pressure.
Hope I helped!
