NASCAR Racing: Turning left, oval track racing, automobile races

Question
I would like to know the real reason that oval track racing always turns left instead of right? I've heard and read the reason is because of safety so that the wall is not on the drivers side but the sport started out on back roads, farm fields and on the beaches of daytona where there are no walls but they still were running in a counterclock wise direction. Do they turn left in england or austrailia where the driver is on the right side of the car or do they run clockwise because of the wall? Even in indy, midget and dirt track racing the driver is in the middle of the car so the wall explanation doesn't hold up, not to mention motor cycle racing. Is there an offical, real reason or explanation? or is that just the way it is??
It would make for a real interesting season if they mixed it up a bit, some left and some right and I'm not talking about road racing. Think about it, all oval or circle track racing is counterclock wise, bicycles, go-carts even track and field foot races. Is there a reason for this??

Answer
Hi Mike,

Although there is no real answer to this, one answer is that race cars go counterclockwise on ovals because horses go counterclockwise on their tracks. And as we all know, most of the first automobile races in America were held at horse tracks.  But some races are held on road courses at Watkins Glen, or Sonoma, or the one in Mexico City that the Busch Series goes to, but I think that is just the way it is because everyone wants to preserve tradition.
Hope I answered your question.
