NASCAR Racing: Race finish question, old wives, busch race

I was asked a question about a race several years maybe decades ago where the leader took the white flag then came into the pits before taking the checkers.  Then said he just messed up.  Is this an old wives tale, I've never heard of it.

I really don't believe this happened to a "winner" at any NASCAR Cup race but know there have been drivers further back that have done it. I do seem to recall Mark Martin doing it in a Busch race though. Couldn't swear to it but seem to remember it being in Bristol and David Green going on to win. I don't have much in the line of Busch records though to prove it. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
