NASCAR Racing: Nascar teams, nascar teams, garage builders

My husband and I were talking about the team/car/garage/builders change that DEI made with Dale Jr. and Waltrip. They only took there sponors and the clothes they race in. Has any race team ever done that before in Nascar history and if so who?  And did it work for them.
DEI said they made a big mistake..and it showed today..Jr. started 3rd. and finished 5th. If he hadnt got damage in the front (right side) and Tony (#20) hadnt hit him in th rear while Jr.was trying to pit..he might of came in 2nd or 3rd.  Or even won..at times he was the fastest.But today showed DEI thru away a whole year.Just wondered if any other owner's
ever tried it. Thanks for your help...Pat

I can't find the exact facts on this but I believe both RCR and Hendrick's have done this in the past. I believe that RCR swapped the 29 and 31 teams and I think Hendricks swapped the 5 and 25 quite a few years back. Don't remember the drivers then, guess the memories slipping.
