NASCAR Racing: tim richmond, tim richmond, nascar drivers

Question
did tim richmond die of aids, and was this because of dirty needle use? Also did NASCAR do a drug test then as now, ie. last year shan hmial, sp. name, had his NASCAR drivers lic. taken away from him. Also why did rookie driver whimmer, get to race after he got a DUI? Does nascar have a double standard?

Answer
Yes Richmond did die from AIDS related illnesses but there was never any proof of any drug problem. Richmond was quite the ladies man and the AIDS was thought to have come from his many sexual relations. Then there was no "must take drug test" rule and Richmond refused many requests for his medical records. NASCAR chose to suspend his license until a NASCAR doctor gave him a clear bill of health.
Why did NASCAR allow Wimmer to drive after a DUI? First, there has been no conviction, only an arrest, so legally (remember "innocent until proven guilty") NASCAR would putting themselves in line for a lawsuit if there was no conviction. Second, there has always been a double standard in DUI. It would seem that there are much stronger repercussions for any drug use, whether while driving or not, than for alcohol use. That's society-wide, not just in NASCAR. So, although alcohol is considered a drug, it would appear that using any "smokable" drug at any time is much worse than driving after getting drunk. Go figure?
