BMW Repair: none, fan blade, oil light

Question
i have a 02 bmw 316i the engine light is always on but car works ok.the oil light has come on now my dad put oil in but light stays on . i also think he put too much in

Hello mark,

I assume you are refering to 2 different lights, The "engine" light sounds like the engine management light.Looks like an engine in yellow with a fan blade.

This indicates that something is wrong with the emmission controls and needs to be scanned to get a fault code.

The oil light looks like oil can, red when the ignition is on ,engine off. Goes out when you start the car,hopefully, but it can turn yellow to warn you the oil is about1 litre low.

Check the oil level on level ground,engine warm and turned OFF.

Are you sure its not the oil service light indicating its due for a change.
