BMW Repair: 95 BMW 525 I Soutnern California, combustion gases, coolant level

Question
I just bought my car about a month ago.  I went a poured cooliant in my car this morning before I left.  I was driving and my gauge went hot and started smoking.  I got a message that said cooliant Level +.  Did I put to much??

Answer
Never heard of a coolant level + message.  Guessing it may have been indicating coolant level, plus another error, which you would have to push the button to get.

Didn't put in too much coolant.  Likely cap left loose, or ???

The BMW engines are extremely susceptible to overheating.  If your gage went hot, get to the side of the road and get the engine off asap.

If you are low on coolant now, try it again, assuring the cap is solidly sealed.  If it occurs again, I would recommend you get a test done for combustion gases in the coolant (should find someplace to do it for <$75.....some Firestones do).  You need to assure you haven't blown a head gasket.
