BMW Repair: 1995 BMW 325i will not go into gear, 1995 bmw 325i, alignment problem

Question
I have a 1995 BMW 325i with about 157K on the speedo and automatic trans.  I had to replace the gear shift handle about 5 months ago, the handle broke and the car would only go into drive and park.  A few days ago, my wife drove the car and when she parked it, it would not go into drive.  Once you shut the car off, the car can be shifted into any gear.  The car will start in park and neutral but will not move out of either gear.  I took the gear shift handle off and put it back on and the car began to operate properly.  Yesterday, the car did the same thing.  I took the handle off again and put it back on but now I cannot get the car into gear while running.  I did notice some type of clicking noise when the brake is applied before trying to shift into gear.  Any thoughts on this issue?  I would like some idea before taking it to the shop and getting raked over the coals.

Answer
Sorry to ask, but you're sure your foot was on the brake when you tried shifting?

If that's not it, then there is an alignment problem on the mechanism in the auto gear shift mechanism.

Shouldn't be too expensive if you take it in, or you can remove the gearshift handle and boot, and try to figure out what is jammed or misaligned.
