BMW Repair: 98 740il not starting, camshaft position sensor, 740il

Question
QUESTION: I drove my car last night and it was fine, however when I went to leave the engine cranked extremely quick and the car will not start. I think that to crank over at that speed indicates a lack of compression, but there is not other noise associated with this condition. Any suggestion?

ANSWER: One of the tough things about diagnosing over the internet is not knowing how much was checked, or exactly what you heard.

Is it possible you were hearing the starter spin, and not the engine?  If so, it's likely the starter

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: No, the engine is cranking since the fan is spinning. Although the CPS is a possible culprit, My gut feeling is the ignition switch. I replaced it once, but just in the last couple of days, I would pull the key out and it would say that the key was in the switch. Also, the cruise control is acting up. My problem is that I never heard the engine turn over without starting so I don't know how fast it happens. Relative to the car that I am fimiliar with, it cranks really fast.

Answer
I agree with the ignition issue and cruise happening at the same time, it's suspect.  Can't figure anything that would tie them in with the problem you have.

This could be anything from a bad fuel pump to a camshaft position sensor.  If you are interested in digging deep to find it and fix it, you'll first need to determine if it is getting fuel and getting spark.  If so, then you'll need to work through timing issues, which can be major.

I would recommmed a trip to the dealer or a good BMW mechanic.  Can download and find the cause.  May be cheaper as well as much faster.
