BMW Repair: 96 BMW 318i A/C Problems, bmw munich, bmw 318i

Question
I am in the U.S.A.F. stationed in Germany so i drive a BMW 318i Euro spec car. The A/C is an auto clyment control but i seem to have a problem with it. I know it probably needs to be recharged but the thing keeps screwing up. it usually doesn't blow were you want it, usually just blows at the ground. it is a safety concern because in the winter it doesn't defrost anything. I was wondering if you can tell me what might need to be replaced. also I cant find out what needs to be changed to make it a U.S. spec car since i would have to make it one when i bring it state side

Answer
First, thanks for serving.  Most Americans really do appreciate it.

Sounds like your air control isn't working right.  There are multiple (3?) electrical motors that control the flaps directing the air.  There are a bunch of different fuses that play into this system, so you may be lucky.  For example, on a 1992 US unit, it's fuses 16, 20, 23, 31, 37, 39, and 41.

If not fuses, second most likely is the control knob (or digital controller if you have one).  Check the fuses first, then see if you can clean the rotary control with contact cleaner.

Sorry, no idea on what's required for stateside.  BMW-Munich might be able to help.
