BMW Repair: 96 328i, high pressure hose, power steering fluid

Question
QUESTION: I have 1996 328i with under 60K miles. It is leaking fluid. I see under the car where its leaking but I don't know what I'm looking at. Location looks to be in the middle of car, right under the consol. Leak is next to a clamp on one of two long pipes. I'd like to know the problem before I go to repair shop. Please email me if you need more information. I would appreciate any help you can offer me.  Thank you, Leslee

ANSWER: The key is determining WHAT the fluid is.

Water?  Coolant? Oil? Power Steerng Fluid? Brake Fluid? Transmission Fluid? Gas?

Once that is determined, the cause can be chased down.

Thanks 4 the prompt reply. I apologize for my ignorance. I'm trying to learn about my car but the manual isn't much help.I don't know how to determine what the fluid is, however I will describe it. I put paper under leak; fluid looks reddish, viscosity feels lighter than oil. If thats no help please direct me.  Thanks again!

Answer
Sounds like it's power steering fluid.

Power steering fluid leaks very easily.  Could be from a low pressure hose that has a loose clamp, a worn high pressure hose, or from one of the components (pump, rack, reservoir).

Check your PS fluid container under the hood.  (Directions in the owners manual).  See if (1) the fluid is low, and (2) if it looks like what is leaking.  Keep it filled to where it should be.
