BMW Repair: BMW 381i 1997, bmw 381i, 1997 bmw 318i

Question
I just purchased a 1997 BMW 318i and the gentleman said it needed a clutch.  Before I do so, I wanted your opinion.  The key turns; however, the engine does nothing.  There is no turning or noise.  The clutch is very hard and it doesn't seem to go all the way to the floor.  In addition, it felt like the gas peddle was stuck but I seemed to have freed that up.  It's a 5 speed and the shifter goes in all gears but no engine.  Also, the back doors do not unlock.  Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated.  Is it the clutch?  Is there anything I can try to at least get the engine to make a turn?

Answer
Mary Anne,

This car sounds like it needs a lot of work.

I strongly recommend you take it to a trusted mechanic or a BMW dealership to get it analyzed right away.  If you bought it from a dealer, you may have a few days to return it if it is as bad as it might be.

If I am reading more things into your question than the car actually has, I'm sorry.  The 318, especially by 1997, was a very good car.
