BMW Repair: 1994 740il TRANS PROGRAM, trans program, motor werks

Question
Nathan,
Thank you for taking the time to answer my question, the dreaded word "intermittent problem". Here is the situation, car will run fantastic for a week or two, trans program indicator light comes on, car will not start, cranks but will not fire off, my father and I did some research and have had the battery load tested, had the transmission fluid level checked while the car was running good and cleaned the wiring and switches underneath the center console. When the trans program light is not lit the car drives and shifts perfectly, starts right up does not stutter or miss a beat. We are both getting frustrated as I am a full time student and travel 60 miles a day to and from school, having to be rescued only once so far. Any help or input you have is greatly appreciated. Any other information you may need please let me know, thank you again for your time.

Answer
You need to be able to scan the car and read the faults, but it sounds like maybe the shift module on the side of the tranny is not sending the park or neutral message to the DME so the car does not know that it can start because it needs to see that the car is in park or neutral to be able to start, but you really need to be able to scan the DME or the EGS to be able to know.   Thanks Nathan Babbitt (Babbitt Motor Werks)
