BMW Repair: 98 BMW 328 ISA transmission, torque converter clutch, torque converter clutch solenoid

Question
VIN 37660. My transmission went wild up to 7000 rpm and the bmw tech. tells me about a bulletin 24-01-00 and it requires more investigation (fault 111).What can it be and how expensive to fix.

Answer
Pierre, 24-01-00 is for diagnosing the transmission, TCC solenoid, and Torque converter. Three possibilities maybe four, depends how you count. One is a faulty Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid, Another is a Faulty Torque Converter based on your 111 Fault and a Transmission with a later Production date. Another is an Early Transmission production date in which an internal seal kit needs to be installed. Last is a Transmission replacement (comes with converter) determined by transmission fluid color and condition and mileage. Trans. replacement is the surefire fix but also the most expensive repair due to high parts cost and moderate labor charge. Internal seal kit replacement would be second most expensive due to extensive labor and low parts cost. Next would be the Converter replacement with moderate labor and parts. Cheapest would be a TCC Solenoid replacement. Can't quote you prices because I am not the dealership and I don't know what they would charge you. Ask your service advisor to give you prices on each option. Then pay for the diagnosis of which repair is indicated. If the trans is high mileage or the fluid is smoked then you'll need a Transmission.
