BMW Repair: information readout, oil change reminder, bmw vin

I have a 1997 BMW vin #vdl42402. My readout in the dash panel works intermittently. Sometimes the information will read out fine and other times I can barely make out what the odometer says. Seems to be temperature related. The radio is affected the same way, also the heater a/c temp readouts.  I purchased an oil change reminder reset tool and was wandering if this tool could of caused this problem.  The BMW dealer said I would need all three pieces (dash, radio,heater control) at eleven hundred dollars apiece plus labor. They said the pixels burn out but how can they be burned out and still work at times? Thanks for any help you can give me.   Rudy

Rudy pull out the displays and try replacing the back lighting bulbs to see if that is the issue. Reset tool is not related to your issue. If the individual pixels on the diplay are missing then you will need new components. If the display is dark, try the back lighting bulbs on the back side of the units.
