BMW Repair: buying a bmw, bmw 323is, 1999 bmw 323is

Question
im in the process of buying a new car and i fell in love with a 1999 bmw 323is the car has 140k miles but the engine only has 90k was fully replaced with clutch and everything.

my uncle checked the car out with me and he says that since the car was using regular 87 octane gasoline it's engine might kick the dust. is this true? he tells me not to buy the car based on this reason. this is currently the only thing stopping me, is it really that big of a deal that the owner didnt put premium gasoline in this car?

thanks,

Answer
Alex, this is entirely possible. These are high compression BMW straight six cylinder engine. They require 91 octane or higher for proper operation. It is not probable that the motor will grenade on you but I wouldn't buy a car that you know has been neglected or improperly used. You are shaking hands with danger in my opinion. Others will tell you that they run 87 octane in there M52tu or M54 engines with no problem. Fine let them. Besides 1999 was first model year for the E46 3 series. I would much prefer you buy an 2001 model year car or newer as they are much better cars with better equipment (engine/trans). Take your time and shop around and get to know the E46. I would recommend a manual transmission if possible. Props to your Uncle.
