BMW Repair: FSU or something else, climate control unit, automatic climate control

Hey Evan,  I have a 1996, 328i, serial AV39775.  I am tossed as to the actual problem.  The climate control unit has the following behavior.  Sometimes completely dark, unresponsive.  Sometimes comes on after care has been running for 15 or so minutes, sometimes goes dim & unresponsive after working, or simply goes completely dark.
Your expertise is greatly appreciated.

Jim, replace the Automatic Climate Control Panel/Module and have it coded at the dealer. There are some companies that can repair it for you if you send your unit to them. Or better still you can try you hand at replacing the faulty capacitor on the circuit board if you are reasonable competent with soldering. Follow instructions to be had at macadamizer.com/bmwfix.html  Let me know how the repair fairs if you try this method. I need feedback on this repair.

JIM, did you end up replacing the unit or replacing the capacitor as the website outline? Let me know in detail if you replaced the capacitor, how it went, How hard it was,etc..
