BMW Repair: 97 BMW short circuit, fuse box, windshield wiper

Question
I have 97 e36 328i with 168,000 miles.  Has been doing well.  Out of the blue the radio and wipers stopped working.  Checked the fuse box and one of the fuses was blown.  Changed it, and radio and wipers started working again.  1 minute later, again no radio or wipers.  Checked, and same fuse blown again.  Any help is appreciated.  Thanks.

Answer
Jay, I am taking to mean fuse #44 a 15amp fuse? This fuse powers the washer pump, radio, glovebox light, and Windshield wiper module and the wiper stalk switch through the module. I would start by replacing the fuse (buy a bunch of them). Unplug the radio, glovebox light and washer pump. Operate the wipers. See if the fuse blows again. Eliminate consumer components on the circuit to narrow your search. Then add them back in and see what branch of the circuit blows the fuse. The wiper module is behind the glove box. Should be a small square module with one connector. You can remove this component's connector and see if your fuse lasts. Same with radio. You get the picture. If unplugging the wiper module works then remember that the wiper motor and wiper stalk switch also get power from the module and you should unplug and retest them aswell. You have some work to do. Good luck. Get a bentley, hayne or chilton manual if you want the wiring diagrams.
