I finally let my BF drive my car and he brings it back without the automatic top operational.  The dash shows my trunk is unlocked so the top won't go up but the locks operate.  My mechanic friend thinks the problem in the multiplex switching which he says requires proprietary BMW testing equipment to readily fix.  Sounds unfortunately expensive to find and fix but it's starting to rain in MN

Martha, have your mechanic friend check the electrical connection between the body and the trunk lid. Specifically the wires that run in the rubber boot between the trunk and body. The wires can rub on the metal of the trunk lid and break causing odd electrical issues such as yours. Also lube the trunk lock latch and makes sure it works smoothly.
