BMW Repair: 528 trunk latch, torx bolts, retaining clips

Question
Could  you describe the procedure to replace the trunk latch on a 1998 528I?  My latch stopped working as it doesn't latch into position to keep the trunk closed.  Using the key to lock the trunk doesn't do anything.  I can manually move the mechanism but it doesn't lock into position.

Answer
Ray, you have to remove the trim panel around the latch. Lever out the expanding plastic rivets next to the bumpers on the bottom. In the recess handles remove the little inserts to reveal the philips screws and remove. Then pry the piece of the trunk. There are four retaining clips. Replace if broken. Remove the lock actuator rod on the right and release the torx bolts for the latch and the remove the connector for the actuator. When you reinstall the latch make sure you test it without closing the trunk.
