BMW Repair: 2000 e46 323I, gabe gabe, clutch work

Question
I am in desperate need of some direction. I was driving my car and had noticed that when in any gear if I hit the gas the rpm would excel, but the speed of the car would take a while to catch up. Then out of no where as I was driving along I heard a noise and loss of speed while hitting on the gas pedal. It started smelling burnt and a rattling sound. Car does start just nothing happens when in gear and pressing gas. Not sure if the clutch went out or if it may be something else. Please let me know if the clutch work is a do it yourself sort of project?? If indeed it is that.
thanks,
Gabe

Answer
Gabe, clutch work is a pain to do it yourself as you will have to remove exhaust, driveline, and transmission on your back and it can be a bear to properly line up the trans with the clutch. If you haven't done plenty of clutches before then don't cut your teeth on a BMW. Burning smell like brakes is always clutch disk slipping and overheating.
