BMW Repair: E46 Handbrake Movement, brake rotors, drum brakes

Question
Hi Evan. Back to pick your brains again. I noticed when I got my e46 coupe that when I put the handbrake on and release the footbrake that the car moves slightly. I've managed to get the rear up and found that with the handbrake fully on the rear wheels can move back and forth about a cm on the tyre quite freely and are solid either side of this movement. Also, when I get out of the car parked on an incline there are a few creaks as something in the mechanism takes the strain. Really wierd one. The handbrake works but I can't think what could be loose? Any ideas yourself? Thanks. Roy.

Answer
Roy, Parking brake should hold the weight of the vehicle in less than 10 clicks of the handle. The squeek you hear when you get in and out of the car with the hand brake applied is normal and all BMWs do this. The E-brake shoes are in the rear brake rotors and you can rotate the little adjuster wheel like normal drum brakes to adjust the clicks to your preferance. I would pull the rear brakes apart if you are unhappy and adjust/clean them. Look for cracking of the shoes and replace if necessary. That little movement is nothing to worry about.
