BMW Repair: bmw smella like gas, bmw 740il, purge valve

bmw 740il. 1998.

Every so often, maybe 4 times a week I get a faint gas smell. The car is running fine with no excessive fuel usage.(lil bit more than usual) When I go under the hood it seems to come from the front of the engine.

and also,in one month  My car have fail to start on the first try 4 times. even if the  the engine has been run .it does not happen very often.The car runs great once it has started; it doesn't have any trouble idling.the check engine light would come on and go off...
What  could be wrong?

Miguel, you might have a leaking injector or a purge valve. Hard to say. As for the intermittent no start it could be an ignition switch or a faulty key. Try using a different vehicle key for a while an see if it continues. If the check engine light is going on and off then read out the fault code stored in memory.
