BMW Repair: BMW repair, car beeps, 2001 325i bmw

Question
I have a 2001 325i BMW sedan.  The external thermometer is missing and
there are 2 wires hanging freely in it's place.  The temperature display inside
the car changes constantly (as in every 5 seconds) from -20 to 122 and
anywhere in between.  Every time it changes, the car beeps.  Is it possible to
stop the beeping without replacing the expensive thermometer?  I never paid
attention to it anyway.  If not, how difficult it is to replace, what part I would
need and would it be available from anyone other than the dealership?  More
than anything I would like the beeping to stop!  It takes away from my BMW
driving pleasure.  Thank you.

Answer
Sarah, replace the sensor and the fender liner support. At the BMW parts department request the front fender liner, the screws and clips, The outside temp sensor, The harness connector and the wire repair kit. Have a qualified shop make the repairs since you have an obvious aversion to the dealer. The Temp sensor is a resistor so if the wires are apart it reads -40 degrees and if they are shorted together if reads 122 degrees. The temp sensor is about forty bucks and the liner and screws aren't that much either. Not hard to replace at all but I suggest you solder the wires and not crimp connect them together as the wires are outside and will encounter moisture. You drive a BMW so take pride and I suggest repairing them so your car doesn't look like no one cares about it. Just remind yourself that BMW's are low to the ground so be careful on curbs and driveways so as to not break the fender liners.
