BMW Repair: eml light comes on, electronic engine management, engine management system

Question

---------------------------------------check the battery on weds, and yes it was the battery had to purchase a new one. but that beats driving 70+miles to have it checked out . thanks a lot tino

-----Question-----
okay the eml has something to do with the engine electronics and states in the owner's manual that there is a fault in the electronic engine-management system. today the whole power system completely  shut off, losing power for a split second and then it catches up again. All the dash lights came on just as if starting the car up.

thanks

-----Question-----
i own a 330i 2002 bmw on last friday i put some gas in my car and after i drove off from the gas pump my eml, abs, brake lights all begin to come on. So i figured it was the gas so we put gas treatment in it and burned that gas off. But now the eml light comes when turning to the right of curves or rough terrain, and if i run over a small stick or something in the road. Also i can pull up and park and wait about 3 minutes and it will not start then if i raise the hood for 10 seconds and try and crank it again it will crank. Do you have an answer for this problem or suggestions?

Thanks

Bonita

Hello Bonita,
I would suggest that you have the vehicle scanned for OBD 2
faults. Then tell me what faults are revealed.
And just to be sure, kindly tell me what you mean by EML.
This is not a condescending question. Some people simply have told me a lot of things that are different from what they really are or meant. Better still, just tell me how the "checklight" or pictogram looks like.

Hi Bonita,
Thanks for your update. I can only recommend two things---
first, check the battery cable terminals if they are not loose. Next, have the car scanned for faults. Your car is a relatively new model which is more sophisticated than most cars on the road.  Go to Auto-zone or other car parts stores that would scan your car for free (then tell me of the faults found). Even if you know the faults, it does not mean that you know what has to be repaired in your car (it is not that simple). You still need a mechanic to analyze it.
The DME(engine computer), ABS (brakes), ASC/DSC(traction control), and EGS (transmission control) all interact  dynamically in complex ways. Problems in one usually affect the others. And a battery problem affects all.
I can make informed guesses, but they are still guesses.
I would prefer knowing a scanner's findings.

Answer
Hi Bonita,
I am sorry that you had to go out of your way to have the car scanned. I could have just recommended that you have the battery tested somewhere nearby. But battery testing can never compare with a scan.
I would suggest that you buy one of those OBD2 scanners that parts stores sells. Don't buy the cheapie ones, choose a middle of the road priced tool and go for it. It would pay for itself many times over along the road.
Have a nice weekend.
