BMW Repair: Key batteries 2001 525i, daytime running lights, remote keyless entry

Question
I recently purchased a 2001 525i and the remote keyless entry will not work on the car. The dealer tells me that the batteries must be dead, however I read in my owners manual that these will re-charge in the ingnition on a long drive. So my question is: is that for all models or do I need to get a new key? Also, the manual says that it is a memory key, where can I get another one as I do not see how the batteries can be replaced?

Answer
Wendy the 2001 model year keys do not have a replaceable battery. The battery is recharged with the key in the ignition and can become discharged if not used for a while. If you were to replace the key you need a copy of your vehicle registration and Drivers license and take to dealer to order the new key (usually 125-150$). The memory feature you speak of has to be programmed into the car by the dealer's diagnostic computer. You can turn on/off daytime running lights, Pathway lighting, auto door locking after 10mph, and other such things. When you get the system working you can inquire about these at the dealer. So make sure you have driven the car recently and the key is charged. I want you to try and Initialize the key to the car. Get in with both keys, close door, and insert one key turn the key to 2nd postition (key on engine off, two clicks) turn off key and remove. depress and hold front unlock button while pressing the lock (bmw logo button) three times and then release the unlock button. Door locks should travel up and down if it worked. Take 2nd key and depress unlock while pressing lock button three times and release unlock. Lock will again move if the key is recognised. Everytime you cycle the key the Initalization process starts over. If you only initialize one key it will kick the other key out from memory. You can use a neighbors 2001 or newer keys to try to rule out your keys from being faulty by initializing them to your car. You must reinitialize to your neighbor's car though. If initalization doesn't work then please check all your cars fuses both glove box and right rear trunk fuse carrier by the battery. Let me know what you find.
