BMW Repair: 1990 325i Touring coolant light on, coolant level, coolant system

Question
Hi, coolant light on (on overhead display) at start up, no overheating and coolant level looks ok (can it be too high?) why is the light always on, thanks if you can help.
Dave

Answer
Dear Dave,
At start-up most older cars display check control messages which turn off after a few seconds. Others even require the driver to press on the brake pedal first before it turns off ( this does not relate to yours).
But check the coolant system just to be sure.
Open the radiator/expansion tank filler cap, remove the bleeder screw beside the cap area, refill with coolant to tip of filler neck, put back bleeder screw, ask an assistant to run engine to 1500 rpm then simultaneously top-off
coolant and put back cap. Next operate the heater and run the motor for approximately 1 minute. Then re-check coolant level. You are done...assuming that you have no coolant leak somewhere.
Also, if the coolant light still stays on even when the engine is already in operating temperature, then replace
the coolant level sensor which is located beneath the expansion tank (again, provided that the wires are not cut or something like that).
