BMW Repair: Expansion valve 1993 318i E36, rubber molding, electrical cables

Question
How do I get to the expansion valve the easiest way possible. I understand that it is located with the evaporater I seem to have trouble getting to it.

Answer
Hi Joshua,
There is no easy way to go about it.
Aside from the usual precautions on working with AC systems,
(whereby it is a pressurized system which could hurt/ the
Freon should not be vented out to the atmosphere/ and the AC system should not be left open for 24 hours otherwise you need to replace the filter/dryer), the actual procedure is a little complex. Repair instructions by TIS (technical information system) is not very clear either, but at least it has visuals which could help you a lot. I can send the TIS repair instructions to you by fax or by mail if you would give me your address or at least a fax number.
But the gist of it is this---
a) suction remaining AC freon from system if there is any left
b) open front hood, remove rubber molding around grille area beneath wiper arms, pry off grille, remove 2 screws beneath grille, and 2 screws of bracket at right side of grille area
behind the accordion hose containing the electrical cables
(this is in the firewall/bulkhead)
c) remove the glove box: but to do so you have to pull out the left and right grilles, disengage flashlight socket and push rearwards, remove screws found behind grilles (2) and at sides of glove box(4), also 2 screws at bottom/beneath glove box, then pull out glove box and disconnect plugs.
d) once the glove box is removed which presupposes that you have also removed what ever cover is beneath the glove box, then you have to unclip and take out the plastic airduct on the left side. Remove the 2 screws securing the control module holder and tilt the holder downwards. Remove 4 (?) screws holding evaporator side cover and remove cover.
Remove screws holding AC tubes/pipes and push out tubes.
Remove screws of expansion valve and replace valve.
Make sure that you replace all seals/0-rings with proper
replacements. Re-install components. Vacuum system, check for leaks, and refill with freon.
These instructions may not be very clear. Even if you buy a book it will still not be very clear. Even if you access BMW instructions, it will also not be very clear. I am telling you this because repairing a car, specially a BMW takes some doing, brains and common sense.
Have a nice weekend.
