BMW Repair: Cuts out on idle - 1990 325i Convertible, air flow meter, vacuum leaks

Question
The car dies when I let it idle without giving it gas. RPMs drop and it stops. It happens anytime I stop the car if I don't drive with two feet (left on the brake and right giving a little gas). It has an automatic transmission.

Also, my radio keeps blowing it fuse. If I replace it, it blows right away. Do you have any experience with that?

Thanks very much.

Answer
Matt,
Are you running the air conditioning when the car stalls?  A/C can put a big load on the engine, and if it is not running 100%, then the A/C will show where the problems are.

There are several possibilities for why your car is not running perfectly.  Vacuum leaks, the Idle Control Valve is dirty/broken, the Air Flow Meter is not working correctly, and a few other small reasons.  I would check for vacuum leaks first, that's the easiest to fix, and most common problem with these cars.

Have you replaced the factory radio with an aftermarket head unit?  If so, there is likely some faulty wiring, and it' grounding out on another wire or the chassis of the car.
Double check all your wiring, and make sure its all correct.

 Good luck,
 Josh
