BMW Repair: 1996bmw e38, throttle position sensor, fuel pressure regulator

Question
Driving without any difficulty, engine lost power remained cranked but would not go, appeared not to be getting gas to engine no matter how many times accelator pushed. replaced fuel pump & fuel filter, rough start once then died still cranks but does not start Any Suggestions?

Answer
Hello Glenn,
Without the benefit of a scanner to help diagnose the problem and not even knowing if your car has a check engine light, then it is back to basics:
a) Check for fuel pressure at the fuel rail (the fuel pressure regulator may be bad and allowing all the gas to go back to the tank and subsequently not provide enough pressure to the injectors. Or you may have a new pump and filter but the fuel pump relay may be defective or not getting the signal from the engine computer to turn on. You failed to mention that you have verified the functioning of the fuel pump.
b) Verify that the throttle valve opens when the accelerator pedal is pressed.
c) Check for spark at the plugs (buy a plug tester at your local auto supply store, this is a plug -like tool that you attach to the coil instead of the regular plug, and grounds to the engine).
If you have both gas and spark, and the throttle moves, then you need a scanner to read faults present. Otherwise you would have to do a trial and error kind of repair (wherein you replace suspect parts with new/good parts) which is very costly, time-consuming, and simply the wrong way to do it.
Probable defects--- engine/ignition fuses, DME relay, fuel pump fuses and relay, cam sensor, throttle position sensor, DME, valve timing, etc. etc.
