BMW Repair: 94 540i Transmission / Drive Shaft, bmw car club, drive shaft

Question
A noise just started which comes from under the emergency brake handle that sounds like it's coming from the drive shaft.  The car has always "shuttered" a little bit when accelerating and when it changes gears, mostly from fist to second.  Not a bad shutter but a bit of a shake.  I can't find a good mechanic in Raleigh.  One that I was referred to told me it was a bad catalytic converter and the parts are $1,000, no labor included.  The BMW dealer rode with me and listened to the noise and told me it was the Guipo (sp?) and / or the drive shaft and that I could also have metal floating around in the transmission.  If it's just the Guipo they want $650, and it goes up from there.  Any help you can give me (especially a good mechanic!) would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks,  Andy Smith

Answer
Dont know a good mechanic but try your local bmw car club for a referal.
The guibo is a common failure as are the u-joints themselves. The is also a center support bearing and mount the could be going bad.
Depending on mileage you might just want to get a complete rebuilt driveshaft.
