BMW Repair: Fuel leak, charcoal canister, inlet pipes

Question
Hi Tino

I have a leak from the fuel tank filler pipe on a E30 1994 touring lux
I have replaced the hose but it still leaks (drips every 1/2 second)when the engine is running & car stationary.is this due to pressure? as the level in the tank is nowhere near the the filler neck.
no other leaks on the tank inc fuel inlet pipes on pump.
Thanks
paul

Answer
Hi Paul,
I am sorry but for clarity's sake I prefer to work on the basis of the car's numbered designation (like 318i, 325e) and not touring lux. The only E30 made in 1994 is a 318i so I am basing my suggestions with this car in mind.
First safely raise the car on a lift or a reliable jack stand
(lifting only the right rear tire, put blocks on the two wheels at the left side), remove the right rear tire and fenderliner, and look for the leaking part.
The filler tube is a two part affair that connects to the fuel tank. There is also a charcoal canister that soaks up the gas fumes from the tank which could leak. Then the expansion tanks with its several hoses. Any of these could leak aside from the tank itself. If it is only the filler hose that leaks, then you have to remove it again, make sure that the mating surface to the other hose is clean,  replace the clamp, tighten, and re-check for leaks.
And yes, the gas tank is pressurized when the engine is running but this is normal as part of the emissions measures
of the car. Take precautionary measures when working on gas tanks to prevent spills, fires, etc.
