BMW Repair: E30 engine swap, stock engine, wiring harness

Question
Removing 86 325 engine from an 86 325 , and installing it in an 88 325 i.s.  I had planned on removing most components from the i.s. Motor including the intake ect, and anything that was in better shape, I am having a hard time getting at two transmission bolts, and wondered if I should be removing the intake and everything around it first? was hoping to get it out and line the two motors up and swap the necessary parts, and toss the one in the other, any tips or an order of part removal would be appreciated!  PS its a 5 speed..

Answer
Lain,
First off, I hope that you understand that these are two totally different engines.  If the '86 325 has it's stock engine, it will not run properly in the 88 325is.

The 325 has a 2.7L that makes 121hp, while the 325is has a 2.5L that makes 165hp.  Both engines have different rpm redlines, fuel needs, and electronic needs.  So simply swapping these engines is not going to work, unless you can figure out how to swap the wiring harness as well.  I didn't know if you knew this, but if you have any other questions, please feel free to ask.

Ok, about the tranny removal... you have finally got to the bolts that make people cry.  When trying to remove them, make sure no childeren are present, because you will say things your mother wouldn't approve of!
I know some people put a hoist on the engine, and add some pressure.  Then remove the motor/tranny mounts and pull the engine forward (radiator will probably need removal).  Once the engine has slid forward a few inches you should be able to get your hand down behind the engine and remove the bolts.

The other option is to raise the car, get underneath and use some really long extensions and a break bar.  You should be able to get the socket on the bolt and sit back at the rear of the tranny and break them loose.

 Good luck,
 Josh
