BMW Repair: 88 325ic wont start, path of least resistance, metal shaft

Question
I have a 88 325i conv w/ 165K mi on the motor, I need a valve job and it burns a little oil not to mention the front seal leak....anyway here is what happened.  It was a warm afternoon around 80, I started my car it was idling fine, started to pull out of the parking stall and it just stalled and died.  I tried to restart it nothing.  So I check for spark @ #1 cylinder-check.  I could hear the relay for the fuel pump humming-check.  I changed all six plugs-check.  I could feel the fuel through the hose and the fuel bar to the injectors.  still nothing.  I even opened the cap on the valve cover and watched the cam turn so no broken T-belt.  Checked all relays and the main nothing. I can check my fuel pump but it is only two years old.  Any suggestions where to go nest?

Answer
Niles,
If you have fuel and spark, there is no reason that the engine should not start (especially since you said the t-belt was not broken)

You need to pull of the fuel line and be 100% sure that he fuel pump is working.  Stick the fuel line into a drink bottle and have someone try to start the engine.  Fuel will pump and go into the bottle.  If this is happening, you know it's not fuel (or at least not your pump).  Now check for spark.  Pull of a plug wire, and put a screw driver into the connector.  Lay the metal shaft of the plug across the valve cover and have someone start the engine.  You should see an arc from the screw driver to the engine.  Only hold the screw driver by its handle, because if you hold the metal, electricity will follow the path of least resistance, which is you!

If you have spark, then it's likely your fuel injectors not firing.  You should test the harnes for voltage going to the injectors next.

 Good luck,
 Josh
