BMW Repair: 1999 M3 Convertible Top Problem, silicone spray, spring rod

Question
Evan,

I have a 1999 M3 Convertible (E36).  Today, after I opened the convertible top, I noticed that the covers that normally cover the openings where the convertible top arms fold into the body of the car had not properly engaged and had not covered up the two by three inch opening on either side.  Rather, the plastic pieces has simply gotten stuck inside the opening when the convertible arms would go when the top is closed.

The black plastic piece which is supposed to cover this area is attached (on the botton) to a spring which encases a black plastic rod (about three inches long) that looks like a somewhat curved screw.  The spring itself attaches somewhere inside the opening.  The spring, rod and black cover are all off now and as a result, the convertible top was able to be closed.  However, when I re-open the top, there is nothing to cover up the exposed area.

I have all the relevant pieces (I think) - I just need to know how to reinstall the cover, spring and rod.  The relevant part number (on the black plastic cover is 8-163-329-0 (and below it reads PA6 + GF30)).  Any thoughts on how to get these pieces back in place?

Also, on a separate and unrelated (and much more minor) issue, the button to open my glove compartment and the spring that is supposed to go under it have both popped out.  While I can replace the button and use it to open the glove compartment, it no longer stays in place.  I have both the button and the spring - anyway to put this back in place without going to the dealer?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can provide!

Answer
JJ, The latch covers you just have to weazle them in like they came out. I recommend replacing the spring, and plastic shaft. Lube the channels that the cover slides in with a silicone spray or light grease. The 8-163-329-0 isn't a valid BMW part number. I think they have a repair kit for this. On the glove box button issue I would replace all the little plastic parts that make up the release mechanism and the button. Not very hard to replace at all. If you need to swap the lock cylinder from the old to the new assembly do not remove the key from the cylinder until you have it in the new assembly or all the tumblers will fall out.
