BMW Repair: Convertible top malfunction upon close, inch gap, emergency cable

Question
I have a 1997 328i. When I closed the top I believe it went out of sync when the window didn't get to 90 degrees and the deck lid got cautght upon closing.  Left side locked down but at same time a loud crack happened on right side. Something snapped or popped out of place.
My guess is the hook locked without grabbing the pin first. End result is 1 inch gap on deck lid. Everything locked up solid.

I could only get one motor to release (best guess) This was the motor easily seen in the lower quarter panel...the one hidden in the upper quarter pannel can't tell but lines are tight! The clip released and there is play there but there is tension in the line still.

I could get the lid to press down and completely close the top but it definately isn't right. I can still hear a motor hum upon pressing the top up/down button.  Again nothing moves but now the light on the button flashes constantly.  I'M STUCK!  Any ideas?  I am also looking to find how to re-sync the motors but so far no luck.

Sincerely appreciate any pointers.

Answer
Steve if the rear bow (below the window) doesn't raise high enough to clear the C-top storage lid when it comes down to close then you most probably need to replace the Convertible top tension straps. The run the length of the C-top frame and are elastic and will become lax and stretch too far not keeping the rear bow out of the way of the storage lid. Under the back seat on the driver's side is a orange/red teathered lever. Pull it toward the drivers door until you feel two pops and fully return it to under the seat. You disengaged the C-top motor and the Storage lid motor. You can move the top and lid around manually and inspect the latches and cable for the storage lid. Make sure everything is okay and store C-top in storage compartment. Close the lid as best possible. Reinstall the Storage lid motor to it's transmission that you released when you pulled the emergency cable (vertical motor in LR of trunk behind panel) You can't really see the motor too well but pull it toward the middle of the trunk away from the outside of the car. Should feel it pop back in. Move storage lid a little if you get tooth to tooth contact between the motor and the transmission. Pop the C-top motor into it's trans. (Horizontal motor Left front of trunk behind panel). Now you car Reinitialize (Syncronize) Motors. With the motors back in their trans. and trunk closed have key off and press and hold the Open C-top button and turn the key to the first postion (click) forward. After a little bit the storage lid should close and lock and light should stop blinking. Release at least 2 seconds after the lid has finished closing. Now try convertible top movement. Usually operate the C-top with the engine running because it takes a lot of amps to work the top and it is hard on the battery if the alternator isn't running. If this helps please fill out a follow up survey.
